What does depression look like?

Sadness that you cannot shake? Maybe. Talking too much, too little? Irritability? Poor quality sleep, but not able to drag yourself out of bed. Extreme fatigue. Change in appetite. Not able to concentrate. Or remember things. Not able to think straight, or take in others’ concerns. Not interested in the things you usually love. Withdrawing from friends. I just can’t, and can’t even put it into words. Like the turtle, I am lost and can barely keep my head up.

Has your doctor ruled out low thyroid, anemia, or other medical cause? then it’s a good guess your body guesses no matter how hard you try, it is impossible for you to [fill in the blank], but it is not acceptable to not [repeat earlier blank]. You are in an impossible situation. But what if that weren’t completely true?

Therapy will help you take a gentle, fresh look at that guess, and together find ways out of the pickle, or re-evaluate that ‘guess’ that has been there as long as you can remember.
